How to Change Default Search Engine in Chrome

Chrome is a Google product, so undoubtedly, Google is the default search engine of Chrome. Installing some extensions can mess up your default search engine and replace Google with Yahoo or Bing.

Or, if you want to switch to a different search engine, you can add a custom search engine on Chrome PC. However, you can’t add a custom search engine on a smartphone.

Change search engine on Chrome PC

Chrome Homepage shows a Google search bar; even if you change your default search engine, it will work as it is.

The default search engine is related to the address bar. If you don’t type a domain name, Chrome will search the query on your preferred search engine.

Open Google Chrome on your computer and click the menu icon at the top right corner. Click on Settings from the menu.

Go to Chrome Settings

Alternatively, press ctrl + , on Windows or cmd + , on Mac to visit the Settings page.

Click on Search engine from the left sidebar.

For example, I searched ansmegeek on DuckDuckGo and copied the URL from the address bar that looks like

But when I pasted it on the URL field, I replaced ansmegeek with %s per instruction, and the URL looks like

Click Add.

Chrome will add the new search engine to the Site Search section. If you want to make it default, click on the menu icon beside the search engine.

Change Search Engine on Chrome iOS/Android

You can change your default search engine on the Chrome Mobile version. However, you can’t edit or add a new search engine on mobile.

Change search engine on Chrome iPhone

Open Chrome on your smartphone and tap on your Google profile picture from the top toolbar. It takes you directly to Settings. Scroll down and tap on Search Engine. Choose your default search engine from the list.

Like the computer, Chrome iOS has three search engines: Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. On the other hand, Chrome Android has five search engines: Google, Yahoo!, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Ecosia.

According to Similarweb, Google has 90.68% of the market share as of June 2023. It’s fair if you don’t want to use any other search engine but Google for high-quality results.

However, if your default search engine changes automatically, disable all the extensions and change which extension is causing this.
