How to Change Page Color in Google Docs

Google Docs has a white background by default. You can change the page color from the Page setup. 

The page color applies to the whole document. There are two changes you can’t apply to specific pages.

  1. Page size
  2. Page color

Docs mobile app has a dark and light mode. It auto-detects your system theme and applies accordingly. 

You can’t use any additional color using the app, and you must use the website, 

Change Background Color in Google Docs

Page color and background color are the same thing. You can only find Page color on the Page setup page, so remember the terms. 

  1. Open a web browser and go to the Google Docs dashboard.
  2. Create a blank document or open an existing document. 
  3. Click File from the menu bar. Click File
  4. Select Page setup from the menu; a pop-up will appear on your screen. Select Page Setup
  5. Click on the color wheel below the Page color. Click on the color wheel
  6. Select one of the existing solid colors or click Custom to pick a custom color. Change Google Docs page color
  7. Click OK to Change the page color.
  8. If you want to use the current background color as the default color for your upcoming documents, click Save as default, then click OK.

Change Page Color of a Single page in Google Docs

You can use a 1×1 table to change the background color of a single page of your document.

  1. Point your mouse cursor at the end of the previous page. Press ctrl + enter or cmd + enter to go to a new page. 
  2. Click File from the menu bar and go to Page setup. Select Page Setup
  3. Remove the default 1-inch margins and type 0 in all margin fields. Click OK to save the changes. Remove margins in Google Docs
  4. Double-click at the top of the page, click Options and select Remove Header. Remove header in Google Docs
  5. Double-click at the bottom of the page, click Options and select Remove Footer. Remove footer in Google Docs
  6. Click Insert from the menu; move your mouse cursor over the Table and select 1×1 table. Add a 1x1 table
  7. Right-click on the table and go to Table properties from the menu. Go to Table properties
  8. Click Row from the sidebar, select Minimum row height, and enter 11.68 in the field. Minimum row height
  9. Click Column from the sidebar, select Column width and enter 8.265 in the field. Column width
  10. Click Color from the sidebar and select the Cell background color; it will be the background color of that page. Cell background color

Changing the background color alone can make your document unreadable. You must change the font color to adjust the page color.

Change font color in Google Docs

  1. Open your document in a new tab. 
  2. Select all words by pressing ctrl + a or cmd + a. 
  3. Click the Text color icon from the toolbar. Click on Text color
  4. Select any solid color from the pop-up. Change font color in Google Docs
  5. Or click Custom to pick a unique color. 

Change background theme in Docs mobile app

Docs mobile app has two themes; dark and light. You can change the theme from the app Settings.

  1. Open the Docs app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap the hamburger icon from the top left corner.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.
  4. Tap Theme from the settings page.
  5. Select Light, Dark, or System default

The default theme is System default, which means the app detects your system theme and chooses the same theme for the app.

Dark theme: Black background and white font color. 

Light theme: White background and black font color

Changing the page color is often needed when working on anything other than text documents.

You may need to use different colors on different pages if you design posters or brochures.
