Gmail Not Receiving Emails: 16 Ways To Fix This

Is Gmail not receiving emails? Don’t worry; you can expect Gmail to work as long as Google is operational.

Even though my professional life depends on email, sometimes I desperately wait, but the email doesn’t appear in my inbox.

Then, after a while, I go to the Spam folder, and the email is there.

It’s one of many scenarios that can happen if you don’t get the email you are expecting in your inbox. But there are over a dozen reasons why you may face this problem.

Check your internet connection

Check Internet Connection

Sometimes everything is working fine and suddenly stops working. And the reason behind this is no internet connection.

However, you can troubleshoot this problem in a minute because everything connected to the internet warns when there’s no connection.

If you are on the Gmail website, the Inbox folder refreshes whenever you click on it. But if there’s no internet connection, it will warn you that you are not connected.

Also, the Gmail mobile app shows No connection if you refresh the homepage.

No connection

So, if you are not getting the new email because of the internet connection, wait until the connection is okay.

Check the Spam folder

The Spam folder is the dumpster of new emails. Especially if you are expecting the very first email from an unpopular service, Gmail can consider it spam.

Gmail’s spam filter is decent, but sometimes it doesn’t work as intended.

If your internet connection is working, checking the Spam folder is the first thing you should do.

Check Spam Folder

And if the email is in the Spam folder, open the email and click Report as not spam.

Report not spam in gmail

It will move the email from Spam to Inbox. And in the future, Gmail will show the email from that sender in the Inbox folder.

Check your Gmail storage

Gmail doesn’t have separate storage for the mailbox. It has 15 GB of free storage for all Google Services, including Google Drive and Photos.

Check your available storage

It’s tough to fill up that storage using emails only, but it’s easy to run out of storage when you back up your phone using Google Photos and Drive.

Analyze Google Storage

If there’s no free storage on your gmail account, it won’t receive new emails because there’s not enough storage to save them.

You can analyze your Google Storage and free up some space to start receiving emails.

Check All Mail

The Gmail website or mobile app has an option called All Mail. It shows all emails from Inbox and Archive. Archived emails won’t have the Inbox label beside the email subject.

Click on More from the left sidebar.

Click on More

Go to All Mail from the menu.

Check All Mail

There are two ways an email can disappear from the Inbox.

If you manually archive an email or set a filter automatically skips the Inbox when an email meets certain conditions.

Clear Unnecessary Filters

Gmail doesn’t have any filter in place by default. But if you configured a filter, it can interfere with the upcoming emails on your account.

You can clear the filters if there are any active filters so the new emails come directly to the Inbox.

Open a web browser and go to the Gmail website. Click on the Settings icon at the top right corner and select See all Settings.

See all settings gmail

Switch to the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab, and click Delete beside the filter.

Go to Filters and Blocked Addresses

Select OK from the pop-up.

Delete unnecessary filter in Gmail

Unless an email seems spammy, Google won’t move it from Inbox in the future.

Check Forwarding Settings

There are two ways of forwarding emails from your Gmail account. You can forward all emails from Settings or create a filter to forward specific emails.

If there’s anything wrong with the forwarding address, you can disable forwarding from Settings.

You can clear the forwarding filter using the process mentioned above, but if you are forwarding all emails, you can remove forwarding from Settings.

Click the Settings icon, and select See all settings.

See all settings gmail

Now switch to Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

Disable email forwarding in Gmail

Select Disable forwarding if you don’t want to forward your emails in the future.

Forwarding is not a big deal if it’s configured properly. By default, Gmail forwards your emails but keeps a copy in your Inbox.

So, even if the forward address is wrong, you can find the email in your Gmail account.

However, if you forward and delete the copy from your Gmail inbox, you can’t recover the emails if the forwarding address is wrong.

You can remove the forwarding address anytime you want. Click on your current forward email address and select Remove <email address>.

Remove active forward address

Select OK from the pop-up.

Check Blocked Address

You can block an email address on your Gmail account, but the block works differently.

The sender can send you emails, but instead of sending the email to your Inbox, Gmail will move them to the Spam folder.

Gmail also auto-deletes emails from the Spam folder after 30 days. So, if you found an important email in the Spam folder, check whether you blocked the sender.

There are two ways to unblock a sender on Gmail.

First, open one of the emails from the sender. You can see a warning to Unblock sender if the sender is blocked. Click on it and select Unblock from the pop-up.

Second, click the Settings icon and go to See all settings.

See all settings gmail

Now switch to Filters and Blocked Addresses.

Remove the desired sender from the block list.

Check POP/IMAP

Email providers and clients use two types of protocols to receive emails. IMAP and POP.

POP protocols download the emails on the device and delete the copy from the server. On the other hand, IMAP shows emails from the server and doesn’t delete emails from the server after syncing.

However, even if you use POP, you can keep a copy on Gmail instead of deleting it.

If you use any third-party email client, ensure the IMAP/POP is enabled, or you won’t receive new emails.

Click on the Settings icon and select See all settings.

See all settings gmail

Now go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP

Enable IMAP or POP

Check if IMAP/POP is enabled.

Check Phone Storage

Gmail mobile app can stop receiving emails for two reasons. If the account storage is full and if the device storage is full.

Why do you need phone storage to receive emails?

Because the Gmail app syncs new emails and cache data, even if there’s no internet connection, you can check previously synced emails from the app.

If there’s no storage left on your device, Gmail won’t be able to operate. Hence, there will be no new email.

So, if you run out of storage, clear some data or uninstall some apps to free up storage.

Remove and Add the account

Gmail doesn’t have a native app for computers. That’s why we all use third-party email clients to access our Gmail accounts easily.

Sometimes, your client can stop receiving new emails from your Gmail account due to a connection error.

In that case, try to remove and add the account to restore the connection.

Most email clients have Gmail settings pre-configured, and you don’t need to configure the server settings.

But if you have to, here is the server configuration for the Gmail account:

IMAP Settings
Server: imap.google.com
Port: 993
SSL: Yes
SMTP settings:
Server: smtp.google.com
Port: 465
SSL: Yes
Requires Authentication: Yes

Change Browser

If the Gmail app works correctly on your smartphone or other email clients, your browser may have a problem.

You can clear the browsing data, cache, and cookies or use a different browser. If you use Chrome, try Safari, Firefox, or Edge.

Login in incognito mode

There are dozens of Chrome extensions built for Gmail. If you use any extension, it can cause some technical problems.

That’s why you should always try incognito mode without any extensions when anything goes wrong in a browser.

It’s a great way to determine whether the problem is on your end or the server side.

Check if Gmail is down

Google never goes down; that’s what we have seen for years. But sometimes its services face some technical issues.

It can affect Gmail too, and it’s not abnormal. Technical outage happens every now in then. You can use a down detector to check if Gmail is down.

Update Gmail app

If Gmail is not working on your smartphone, there may be a pending update with the bug fixes.

Open Play Store or App Store on your smartphone and search for Gmail. If there’s an update available, you can see the Update button.

Update the app, and it should work fine.

Sync Gmail on Android

Syncing means updating the content of the account to the latest state. If there’s a new email on your account, it will only be available on the mobile app if it syncs with the web.

If you are using the Gmail app for Android, you can manually turn on sync if it’s off.

Open the Gmail app on your smartphone and tap on the menu icon at the top left corner. A menu will appear on the screen.

Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and tap on Settings.

Select your preferred account and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Select Sync Gmail if it’s not selected already.

Send yourself a test email

As you have tried everything, there’s no reason why Gmail shouldn’t receive email again. You can test if everything is okay by sending yourself a test email.

I do this all the time. Whenever I set a new email, I send myself a test email and then reply to the test email to check whether everything works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take a new gmail account to receive emails?
