How accurate is the Instagram Active Now feature? [2023 Update]

If your friends say you didn’t watch the reels they sent even after staying active, next time, tell them Instagram shows you online even if you closed the app 10 minutes ago.

Sometimes, you may also want to scroll through Instagram reels without anyone noticing you online.

That’s why, along with the accuracy of Instagram Active Now status, I will show you how to disable it on Android & iPhone.

What is the Instagram Active Now feature?

Instagram is a Meta-owned company like Facebook and Instagram. If you use either of them alongside Instagram, you should already know the purpose of the Active Now feature.

Active Status is enabled by default for Instagram accounts until the user decides to disable the feature. It shows your online status to your followers and chats.

It shows a green icon at the bottom right corner of your Instagram profile picture and Active Now below your name in the Chats. But, if you are inactive on the app, it shows when you were last active.

How accurate is the Active Now feature?

I wanted a solid answer, so I performed a test.

I used two smartphones: on my personal device, I used my private account, and on my other device, I used the ansmegeek account to start a conversation.

Then, I closed the Instagram app on my personal device and started a stopwatch. I kept waiting until the 11th minute on the stopwatch.

For over 10 minutes, my profile showed Active Now. After 11 minutes and 30 seconds, I refreshed the chat, which showed Active 11m ago

So, Active Now doesn’t mean the person is still active on the app. They could also close the app within the last 10 minutes.

However, once the inactivity period surpasses an hour, Instagram will stop showing minutes and start showing the time in active closet round figures.

Suppose you closed the app 58 minutes ago; Instagaram will show Active 58m ago. But. if you closed the app 3 hours 20 minutes ago, it will show Active 3 hours ago.  Or, if you closed the app 3 hours 50 minutes ago, it will show Active 4 hours ago.

How to disable the Active Now status on Instagram?

  1. Open the Instagram app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap your Instagram profile picture from the bottom right corner.
  3. Tap the hamburger menu icon at the top right corner of your profile page. Go to Instagram Settings and privacy
  4. Select Settings and privacy from the menu.
  5. Scroll down to the middle of the page and tap Messages and story replies
  6. Select Show activity status from this page. Turn off Active Status on Instagram
  7. Toggle off Show activity status

Your activity status is now turned off; your followers and chats won’t know if you are online.

However, don’t check anyone’s message if you don’t want them to know you are active on the app.

Because even if your activity status is hidden, if you check someone’s chat, Instagram will let them know when you checked the message.
