Instagram Coundn’t refresh feed: Here’s how to fix it

Every day, I see this Couldn’t refresh feed error on Instagram while exploring my feed. And most of the time, I wait for a while for my internet connection to be stable.

But sometimes, it takes more than just waiting to solve this problem. In this article, I will discuss what triggers the error and how to fix this.

Reasons why Instagram shows Couldn’t refresh feed

Poor internet connection

Instagram is a photo-sharing application that completely relies on the internet. So, if it wants to refresh the feed, the app needs to connect to its server.

If the app fails to connect to its server for updated content, it notifies you that it couldn’t refresh the feed.

Bug on an outdated version

Instagram keeps updating the application on the Play Store and App Store frequently. Sometimes, the company adds features or fixes known bugs to the platform.

It could be a bug if you can use other apps seamlessly, but Instagram keeps showing the error.

Instagram is down

I know what you are thinking, but the truth is Instagram faces downtime once in a while. Even if the outage is not global, some users in a specific region can face downtime due to technical issues.

Something is wrong with your ISP

I frequently face this issue when I suddenly can’t use an app I was using a few minutes ago. It doesn’t work unless I change my DNS, but it starts working automatically after a few hours.

Fix Instagram Couldn’t Refresh Your Feed

Use Airplane mode to refresh your internet connection

You often face this error because you are connected to your WiFi, but it shows no internet connection inside the WiFi settings.

You can’t see the warning because it’s only visible when you open the WiFi settings. When it happens, it means your network is not working properly.

So, when you wait a few seconds, the network issue fixes automatically, and you can refresh the feed.

But, sometimes, your device won’t connect to the network automatically. So, turn on airplane mode; it will disconnect from any network you are connected to.

Wait a few seconds and turn off airplane mode. Your device will re-establish the network connection, and the error should be fixed.

Restart the Instagram app

Sometimes, it’s a glitch on the Instagram app and won’t go away unless you restart it.

Restarting the app means closing the app from the app list and opening it. If you go to your device’s home screen and open the app, it won’t restart it.

First, go to your device’s homepage and swipe up from the bottom of the screen. A list of all active apps will appear on the screen. Close the Instagram app from this list.

Now, open the Instagram app and try refreshing your feed. If it persists, you should change your DNS server.

Use Cloudflare WARP

Whether I use Android, iOS, Mac or Windows, Cloudflare WARP is my must-have app.

As I said earlier in this article, sometimes I can’t access the apps I used a few minutes ago because something is wrong with my ISP’s DNS cache.

Install the WARP app from the App Store or Play Store and connect to the Cloudflare server. It will change your DNS, and you can smoothly scroll Instagram without errors.

Log out and Log in to your account

You can’t refresh the feed if the Instagram app fails to connect to its server.

The best way to check whether Instagram services are okay is to log out of your account and try to log in.

If the Instagram servers are fine, you can log back into your account. Otherwise, it will show that something’s wrong with Instagram.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right corner to visit your profile.
  3. Press the hamburger menu icon at the top right corner and tap Settings and privacy.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and press Log out [username].
  5. Select Not Now and then Log Out from the pop-up.
  6. Log in to your Instagram account. If you can log in successfully, the problem will go away.

Clear app cache

Instagram app stores cache files on your device. That’s why you can view some posts even without an internet connection.

A corrupted cache file can prevent the app from showing updated content or refreshing the content at all.

If you use Android, tap and hold the Instagram icon until a menu appears. Select App info from the pop-up and tap Storage usage. Press Clear cache to clear the saved cache from your device.

If you use iOS, uninstall Instagram from your device and install it again from the App Store. It will remove the saved data from your device.

Update the Instagram app

You should update the app if you don’t know the last time you updated the Instagram app or if your App Store / Play Store is not auto-updating the apps over WiFi.

Instagram’s updated version has new features like Notes, and all known bugs are fixed.

Open the Play Store / App Store and search for Instagram. You can see an Update button beside the app if there’s an update.

Always use the latest version of any social media app to avoid technical errors.

Disconnect any active VPN connection

If you use a VPN daily, you may often forget to turn it off when you don’t need it.

I know the advantages of a VPN, but I am well aware of the disadvantages, too. All VPN servers are not equal and gentle.

VPN users abuse some servers, which can trigger Instagram to flag those servers. Unfortunately, if you are connected to a server blacklisted by Instagram, you will have trouble accessing Instagram.

Even if you try other methods, your IP address will remain unchanged unless you disconnect from the VPN server.

Check if Instagram is down

DownDetectotr is my favorite tool to check if my favorite apps have technical difficulties.

Sometimes, it’s only me facing the issue, but sometimes, thousands of people face it simultaneously.

If it’s only me, I know something is wrong with my device or network. You should also ensure that Instagram operates if you can’t solve the issue after trying everything.

There’s another factor that can cause the issue; that is time and date. You can’t use most services if your time and date are unrealistic.

I didn’t focus on this topic because, from my experience, the error Couldn’t refresh feed occurs in the middle of scrolling Instagram.

Your device can’t change in the middle of using Instagram. But it can change if you restart the device and you aren’t using auto time and date.

So, lastly, check the date and time of your device. Correct if those are wrong, and you should be good to go.
