How to view YouTube dislikes in Chrome

YouTube’s official blog says the real reason why they removed the dislike button is to prevent targeted dislike campaigns towards specific creators.

It removed the dislike count from the YouTube API on December 12th, 2021. Currently, you can only view the like count of a video.

Dislike count was also a quality indicator for many types of videos. The only way to understand a video’s quality is by reading comments or watching it.

However, you can get an idea if Return YouTube Dislike is installed on your Chrome or Firefox browser.

What is Return YouTube Dislike?

The browser extension collects video data using YouTube API and scraping. It has the dislike data of over 1 billion videos before removing the dislike count.

It still scrapes YouTube and saves the data on its own database. The extension uses a unique way of counting dislikes.

The number of dislikes the extension shows = (Extension users dislike count/ Extension users like count) x Official like count.

So, the extension relies on users to count the dislikes of a video using its formula. It’s not 100% accurate, but it gives you an idea as it has over 4 million installations from the Chrome Web Store.

It also doesn’t update the dislike count instantly. It uses a cached version of the dislike count and updates every 2-3 days.

Conclusion

It’s not the ideal solution as many YouTube users use the mobile app, and the extension only works on a browser.

But, still, you can get an idea as the extensions collect likes and dislikes from its millions of users.

The extension works great if a video is popular, as it can collect more data. It won’t work well for new or less popular videos.
